Dr. Sharda Sinha

Dr. Sharda Sinha (1 October 1952 – 5 November 2024) was an Indian folk and classical singer Hailing from Bihar, she predominantly sang in Maithili and Bhojpuri language and is called Bihar Kokila, the cuckoo of Bihar.Sinha has sung many folk songs including (Vivah Geet, Chhath Geet and Solah Songs – (Solah Shringar’ means 16 Bridal Adornments that encompasses sixteen steps that women follow for her beautification from head to toe at the time of wedding. This ritual has a very sentimental value for an Indian bride-to-be, as the sixteen adornments rituals are actually what helps her transcend into the beautiful bliss of being married in India.)). Dr. Sinha has received numerous awards for her work, including the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, recognizing her influence in Indian folk music (on the evening of Republic Day in 2018). Her songs are commonly played during festivals like Chhath Puja and weddings, making her a cultural icon in North India. Sharda Sinha expired at 9.20 pm on 5th November 2024 due to refractory shock as a result of Septicemia, an AIIMS official said. The singer, who had been battling multiple myeloma since 2017, lost her husband a few months ago. She is survived by a son and a daughter. Timetribute pays a humble tribute to Dr. Sharda Sinha.
